GE industry experts answer your fleet management questions

Ask the Expert question: Can you provide an example of how GE's Trailer Fleet Services is able to help Private Fleets?

John Lima, VP - Private Fleet market, answers: We just returned from the annual National Private Truck Council meeting where we were excited to share more about why the Wal-Mart private fleet chose GE for its trailer tracking solution. The installation of our VeriWise™ trailer tracking on the Wal-Mart fleet is well underway, and when completed this year will make the world's leading retailer GE's largest trailer tracking customer. But this is just one example of the many solutions we can provide for private fleets - from financing to remarketing to maintenance.

Let me tell you about three very different real-life examples. Right now for instance we are working with a national retailer, a national building supply distributor, and a national equipment rental company.

First, a national retail company that operates a fleet of over 5,000 trailers is in the process of opening a new distribution center and wants to outsource the maintenance. They are trying to get their arms around lowering their entire maintenance costs for an aging trailer fleet. In addition to their maintenance issues, they are also having a problem with trailer utilization. GE can help with these challenges in several ways. By leveraging GE's nationwide maintenance services this company will be able to monitor its nationwide maintenance spend and lower those costs going forward. To help solve their utilization problem, this retail company can utilize our VeriWise Asset Intelligence solution to track their trailers, increase their usage visibility and in turn maximize their fleet utilization. Their utilization can also be helped through the use of remarketing and leasing, creating the right asset mix to improve the overall fleet productivity.

Our second example is a national building supply distributor that uses 1,250 flatbeds in their fleet. This company has a problem with runaway maintenance cost with no detail on specific spend or repair trends. In this case the company can take advantage of GE's nationwide maintenance management services that enables data reporting to control and monitor spend. Long term leasing for upcoming trailer acquisitions will also allow them to keep their trailer fleet updated with newer, cost efficient trailers.

Third, a national equipment rental company with approximately 330 flatbed trailers recently turned to GE to help them with preventative maintenance and financing solutions. Our ability to remarket their older assets, structure a sale-leaseback to monetize their remaining assets to generate cash to be used in other growth areas of their business, and provide preventative maintenance on the remaining assets will reduce their overall maintenance costs.

These are just few examples of how GE is able to offer multiple solutions for your trailer fleet challenges. We understand that managing a fleet effectively requires the right equipment, the right services and the right technology.
