GE industry experts answer questions

Ask the Expert question: While I'm always in the market to supplement my fleet with a mix of new & pre-owned trailers, I've recently noticed a price increase on both new & pre-owned trailers. What's the reason?

John Muzii, Senior Product Sales Manager, answers: Since early 2004, we have seen a steady increase in the prices of new equipment, primarily due to the rising costs of materials such as aluminum, steel, and wood. In accordance, several manufacturers have begun to issue quotes with stipulations allowing for price adjustment up to the point of manufacture. As a result, all manufacturers are experiencing longer lead times.

Since the activity for new equipment directly impacts pre-owned equipment, we are seeing supply chains slowing, as fleets are retaining assets or prolonging disposition. Together, these factors are driving prices up and raising our costs for pre-owned trailers.

Fortunately, there is also good news! Pre-owned equipment is now worth more than ever before - which makes trade-ins far more attractive than in the past. During the last 2 years, we have seen a depressed market and finally the headwind is behind us. The challenge currently facing the industry is a strong demand that is exceeding supply.

So, if you are thinking of selling your trailers - now may be a good time to get the best price. You may be able to obtain higher trade-in value for pre-owned equipment rather than through a manufacturer when purchasing new equipment. Selling your under-utilized trailers also allows you to improve your cash flow by liquidating assets and freeing up valuable capital for investment.

Here at GE, we have an experienced sales force that can assist any customer through its replacement cycle by locating equipment with our national dealer network and providing the best trade-in value for equipment.
